ouView gives top slots to public service for on-demand TV

Alex Lane - Mon, 26/09/2011 - 4:37pm Public service broadcasters will get the top slots for their on-demand TV portals when YouView launches early next year.
The hybrid TV platform has published a draft of its user interface and search policy to the indsutry for comment.
The policy places gives iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5 the same prominence and their parent TV channels on Freeview.
The four public service channels are partners in YouView, alongside internet providers BT and Talk Talk, and TV transmitter operator Arqiva.
However, the service's non-PSB partners will have to compete for top positions with other broadband TV portals.
YouView said: "A diverse range of content providers will be able to make their content available via YouView, and the YouView User Interface and Search Policy aims to ensure that positions in the YouView User Interface and search results are awarded on a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory basis."
When YouView launches, positions in on-demand TV guide will be based on the amount of TV-style long videos they have, and after launch they will b e handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Even services from affiliated internet provders won't get special treatment.

The draft UI and search policy also details the options viewers will see on the main menu of their YouView receiver:

    • Search: this area will provide viewers with the ability to search for content.
    • My View: contains a list of a viewer’s personal recordings, and a list of all scheduled recordings and reminders.
    • Guide: provides listings of linear content by channel for approximately the next seven days, together with any available catch-up or on-demand content for each linear channel for approximately the past seven days. Linear content refers to all television and radio channels made available by DTT broadcast, channels delivered by IP, and On Demand Placeholder Channels.
    • On Demand: provides viewers with access to On Demand Portal Players and aggregated lists of On Demand content displayed by YouView.
    • ISP: this area will provide information on the services provided by the viewer’s own ISP where that ISP is an Affiliate ISP.
    • Settings: this area will display actionable and “for customer information” settings that are held by YouView and the device manufacturer.
    • Help: this area will provide access to help videos and local diagnostic tools.
    • Apps: this area will give access to Apps which are not On Demand Portal Players.
