ASRock managed to impress last week with its intention to release five LGA1155 motherboards equipped with PCI-Express 3.0 ports, but now MSI stepped up to erase its competitor's 'record' and revealed that it will introduce six PCIe Gen3 boards this quarter.
MSI already launched the Z68A-GD80 (G3) and Z68A-GD65 (G3), and is currently readying four more PCI-Express 3.0 models, the Z68A-GD55 (G), Z68A-G45 (G3), Z68A-G43 (G3) and P67A-GD65 (G3). As you can see below, MSI also mentions the X79 Express chipset but that won't make the Q3 cut. The X79 and its partners, the LGA2011 processors are expected in Q4 or Q1 2012.
MSI's LGA1155 PCIe Gen3 motherboards are claimed to be 'future proof' which means they will receive BIOS updates that will enable them to support Intel's Ivy Bridge CPUs which are planned for a March/April 2012 release.
Another interesting mention is that of PCIe Gen3 being the standard for next-gen AMD and Nvidia cards. Of course, this isn't an actual confirmation that the Radeon HD 7000 series or GeForce 600 series cards will have PCIe 3.0 support but it certainly keeps things interesting. As if next-gen graphics cards weren't interesting enough...
Back to MSI's Gen3 boards though, the Z68A-GD80 (G3) and Z68A-GD65 (G3) can now be found on pre-order bearing price tags of 190.36 and 161.15 , respectively.
