Toshiba and SanDisk today opened up their jointly-owned Fab 5 facility in Japan which is able to produce NAND Flash memory chips. Fab 5 is located Toshiba's Yokkaichi Operations in Mie Prefecture and is operated by Flash Forward, a venture in which Toshiba has a 50.1% stake (SanDisk has 49.9%).
Fab 5 started being constructed in July 2010 and now it's ready to start mass production of 24nm NAND Flash using 300mm wafers. The facility is expected to transition of 19nm production in the not too distant future.
According to Toshiba, the facility features earthquake-absorbing structures, multiple power compensation techniques for protection against unexpected disruptions, as well as LED lighting and power-saving manufacturing equipment.
