    NBC inks Russian VOD deal

    Rostelecom has signed a licensing agreement with NBC Universal International Television Distribution.

    Under it, the Russian telco will be able to offer Universal movies on an on demand basis to subscribers of IPTV services operated by Rostelecom throughout the country.

    The latter include TVi, Twist TV, U-Tel TV, J-TV, Disel TV, Avangard TV and Domolink TV.

    Commenting on the deal, Pavel Zaitsev, Rostelecom’s vice president – commercial director, said it is a major contribution to the company’s fight against video piracy.

    ESPN America HD launches on KPN iTV

    ESPN and KPN have sigend an agreement which will bring ESPN America HD on the KPN Interactieve Televisie IPTV platform from tomorrow (September 1).

    With the deal, KPN will become the first television provider in the Netherlands to offer the HD version of the sports channel. The contract also includes the SD version of ESPN America, as well as ESPN Classic.

    “Anyone who has seen sports in high definition, knows it is a great addition to the viewer experience,” said Murray Barnett, VP of sports channels and syndication, ESPN EMEA, in a statement. “ESPN’s mission is to please sports fans worldwide and we have a long history to achieve the most modern technology. The launch of ESPN HD on America KPN is a good example of how we combine technology and content, allowing sports fans and our distribution partners will benefit. “

    KPN TV director Eric-Jan Doornbosch added: “We are very excited to add ESPN HD America to our portfolio. It gives our subscribers more great programming choices. “

    AlloCiné TV launches on Free, Bouygues and Orange

    The French cinema information channel AlloCiné TV has announced its launch on the IPTV platforms Free, Bouygues and Orange.

    It will subsequently also become available on other platforms. On September 20, for instance, AlloCiné TV will go live on the DTH and IPTV platforms of CanalSat, and on October 4 on the IPTV service SFR. By the end of the year it will in addition be offered by the cabler Numericable and on the mobile TV service from Virgin Mobile.

    AlloCiné TV has said its programming is available for free and 100% dedicated to movies. The channel brings news and clips from movies, as well as short documentaries, ‘king of’ specials and other movie related programming.

    The channel will also broadcast one new movie each day, at 8 o’clock in the evening. A total of 190 new titles will be broadcast every year.

    The channel is an extension of the popular AlloCiné.fr website, which offers movie information and a service to buy cinema tickets online.

    French international all-news channel France 24 has signed a new distribution agreement in Germany with Deutsche Telekom.

    The English version of the channel is now available on Entertain, the IPTV service from Deutsche Telekom.

    The new agreement, representing more than 1.3 million households, brings France 24’s total distribution to over 20 million households in Germany.

    France 24 is also available in Germany 24/7, in English and French, on the digital bouquets of the three main cable operators in the country, Kabel Deutschland, Kabel BW and Unitymedia.

    Orca secures Georgian client

    The new Georgian IPTV service Silk-TV has opted for Orca’s RiGHTv middleware and COMPASS content discovery platform.

    Operated by the incumbent telco Silknet, which was privatised in April 2010, Silk-TV will employ its owner’s ADSL2+ and GPON infrastructure, along with set-top boxes integrated with Motorola’s Bitband video servers, to offer viewers a mix of FTA digital and subscription channels, VOD and a PVR product.

    The service is expected to launch at the end of this year.
