Telkom Indonesia has finally launched IPTV

Telkom Indonesia has finally launched IPTVunder the name 'Groovia TV', almost three years after announcing plans to introduce the service.

Groovia TV is initially available in certain areas within the Greater Jakarta area, but the telco plans to increase its service footprint to 300,000 homes by the end of 2011, and bring it to four other major cities in 2012 (Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Semarang). Telkom Indonesia is reportedly aiming to reach 1mn IPTV subscribers within three or four years.

The service offers a wide range of channel packages, including ones aimed at sports enthusiasts, children and movie fans, with the basic package offering 40 channels. The service also offers time-shifting capabilities and video-on-demand and karaoke-on-demand libraries. Channels available on the service include a range of HBO, Disney and Cartoon Network channels, MTV and Discovery Channel.

A triple-play bundle comprising fixed telephony, Groovia TV's basic package and a 1 Mbps Internet connection is being offered for IDR 695,000 (US$ 81) per month, whilst a similar package with a 3 Mbps broadband connection is priced at IDR 1.745mn per month. The cheapest extra channel package ('Groovy Dinasty', offering Asian content) is priced at IDR 50,000 per month, and additional set-top boxes are available to rent for IDR 195,000 for an SD customer and IDR 225,000 for an HD customer.

Telkom Indonesia announced its IPTV intentions back in August 2008, when its pay-TV subsidiary TelkomVision (which delivers both cable and satellite TV services) formed a collaboration with Hong Kong's PCCW to launch IPTV services in Indonesia.

Telkom Indonesia had around 1.65mn broadband subscribers by the end of 2010, giving an 87% share of the country's broadband market.
